“TIME” stage production by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Takatani (Dumb Type)

Do you know Ryuichi Sakamoto’s last theatrical work, “TIME”?

Based on the concept devised by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Dumb Type
The stage play “TIME” was created by Shiro Takatani (artist group), who was in charge of the visuals.

In 2021 at the Holland Festival, an arts festival in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
An acclaimed work that received its world premiere. The first performance in Japan was held in March 2024.

This time, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, you can see a new work reconstructed based on this stage.

What you need to know about Dumb Type and Shiro Takatani

Dumb Type is an artist group formed mainly by students at Kyoto City University of Arts.

It started when members from different majors gathered together and worked together to become a borderless art group.

In 1995, core member Teiji Furuhashi passed away.

The name Dumb Type is a coined word, inspired by the English words Dumb and Type.

Since 1998, Shiro Takatani has been engaged in individual production activities in parallel with “Dumb Type”.
There are many collaborative works with Ryuichi Sakamoto.

German musician Alvar Noto (Carsten Nicolai)

Since 2002, he has been producing albums and holding live tours with Ryuichi Sakamoto.

In 2015, he co-produced the music for the movie “The Revenant” with Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Thai film director Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Do you know Apichatpong Weerasethakul, a Thai film director, film producer, screenwriter, and artist who is also a specially appointed professor at Tama Art University?

He is directing the movie “MEMORIA,” which won the Jury Prize at the 74th Cannes Film Festival in 2021 and will be released in theaters in 2022, starring Tilda Swinton.

There is a collaboration work with Ryuichi Sakamoto’s son!

There is also a collaboration piece with an artist called Zakkubalan.

Zakkubalan is the artist name of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s son, the videographer and film director Soraneo!

When I understand this and look at the work, I feel deeply moved.

He also directed the documentary film Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus, which chronicles Ryuichi Sakamoto’s final performance.
She is the child of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s last common-law wife (who also served as his manager).

Do you know the “fog sculptor” Fujiko Nakatani?

You can also experience the works of 91-year-old artist Fujiko Nakatani.

After Fujiko Nakatani’s “Fog Sculptor” was exhibited at the Pepsi Pavilion at the Japan World’s Fair in 1970, she has exhibited more than 80 fog works around the world and has received worldwide acclaim.

Shiro Takatani and Fujiko Nakatani of “Dumb Type” have collaborated in the past.
